This thread will be filled with photographs of the Franklin & South Manchester Railroad as viewed from the cab of a steam locomotive. I'm posting these pictures for George as FandSM Engineer. The photographs are highly edited frame grabs from a video that Frank Baker made during a photo shoot of the F&SM, that coincided with the 2016 EXPO. I hope you enjoy the F&SM from the perspective of a 1:87 Locomotive Engineer riding a train around the layout. I will be posting a few photographs from the video of forum members taking pictures of the F&SM. The members at the photo shoot were John Siekirk, Jaime Zepeda, Tom Langford, Bob Butts, Frank Baker, Thom Driggers, and Dan Raymond. We look like monsters to the locomotive engineer. Here is a picture of George waving to the Engineer as we begin our run.

The forum F&SM photography team. We took two group photographs - this one was taken by Thom Driggers. I think Dan Raymond left before we got around to taking these pictures because he doesn't appear in either photograph. He will show up in the photographs of the layout. This cast of characters from left to right. Bob Butts, Tom Langford, George Sellios, John Siekirk, Frank Baker, and Jaime Zepeda. The picture with Thom Driggers appears below in Tom Langford's post.

To the FSM Engineer...
Miss visiting Mr. George Sellios and seeing the FSM layout in person.
Last trip was in 2011 and can't believe all the changes done since then.
Glad this Forum posts current photos of all the work done by the creator which inspires all of us.
The FSM threads and new photos here are a great reference to view when inspiration is needed.

Hey:
I agree with Frank. Very well done.

I added an introduction to this thread tonight. The photographs posted so far are some examples of things to come - we will make multiple runs around the layout capturing trackside views of many of the F&SM landmarks from both track directions and in some cases from different tracks. The goal is to add a few pictures each week so you can expect to revisit this thread and find new photographs.
-
Warning- these pictures are going to get you to look at your layout from a different perspective.

This has the making of a great thread. However, I think we should (I) should set the record straight in adding more facts to the story. Yes, this is George's fantastic F&SM layout. Yes, the video is from a small camera provided by Frank Baker and placed on a flat car pushed by a F&SM locomotive.
At the time of our visit Frank asked George if he could run the camera and capture a track level view of the F&SM. I remember George saying, "Well, I don't know. What do you think Thommy"? Thommy, AKA, Thom Driggers said "Yes, we can do this." Thom and Frank set up the camera and Thom made the video. Frank gave him the video card to Thom who took his time and made the video for Frank. Apparently Frank gave a copy to John.
All the screenshots John is posting to this thread are from the video that Thom took and spent hours editing for Frank using Frank's camera.
So, I want Thom Driggers to get the credit he is deserving of.
Thom is shown on the right next to George.

I recognize 1 or 2 of the above, but how about some ID's, please.

Tom
Thank you for posting the picture with Tommy in it - this is the one I took and the picture I posted yesterday was the one Tommy took (the first one I found). The pictures being posted are actually directly from the raw video that Frank and I downloaded to my computer while we were there. Frank and I watched them in the hotel room that night. I'm using a frame grabber to capture the picture from the raw video and then cropping and editing the photo for the thread. Tommy was running the trains the day the video was made. Frank also gave the cards to Tommy for his video - I'm not sure what the status is for it's release. Sorry Tommy, I didn't intend to leave you out and will go back to the intro and change it to include you. We all had a great time that day. It's amazing that it has taken 3 years to get to this project.

John,
No problem, I just knew that Thommy did a lot of the video stuff. He and I became kindred spirits when we discovered we both had a love of fixing, repairing and painting brass locos.
I'm really going to enjoy this thread. Yes, very hard to believe it was three years ago. Damn, I'm getting older by each post. 8)

Sorry again for forgetting Thommy in the original introduction paragraph. You guys sure do make brass locos into pieces of art. I remember he was planning on putting out a video of the F&SM but I think the project got but on the back shelf. I will be preparing more pictures for this thread and posting in the coming days.

Absolutely amazing how these new viewing perspectives still don't reveal any mistakes, hidden compromises, omissions, plaster chips, cobwebs...considering the size, complexity, and age of the layout, it's almost miraculous. Great thread!

John,
Awesome pics from the video. That little camera takes wonderful pictures. I remember when we took them and you went to your room to look at them on the computer, then called me me to hurry up and seen the results. The next day i showed them to George and i thought he was going to cry. Absolutely awesome layout in every way. George should be proud of the wonderful work he has accomplished.

John, Dennis and Frank
I'm enjoying reliving our photo shoot as I prepare these pictures. As you know Frank, I was so impressed with your little video camera that I went out and bought one. I also have a list of things I would do different the next time we photograph the layout. I'm already taking to George about that. Cutting out all the big monster people is a big job. I have a bunch of pictures I'm preparing for the Monsters of the F&SM thread.

I'm glad you are enjoying this. I'm having a great time preparing the pictures and posting them. I talked to George Sellios last week and he is enjoying viewing the layout from this prospective, too.
-
John,
Thanks for taking the time to edit and post these shots. It is pretty amazing how much detail George packed into scenes that cannot be seen from the normal viewing locations. I think the biggest thing I have noticed is how nicely his track flows through the scenes.

You are welcome - I have noticed how consistent the track work looks and how smooth it runs. The camera is very sensitive to bumps and uneven track.

You are welcome Dave. Enjoy.

Dave
Not that I'm aware of. The video I have is the original raw files that are broke into a number of pieces because of the memory cards that were used. We downloaded them to my computer while we were at George's. I will give Frank a call and see if he can give you a better answer.

I'm not sure if we caught an area under repair? I'm sure George will see it in the picture and fix it. There was a dremel grinding wheel in one of the previous pictures. George told me it flew off when he was working in Franklin (years ago).

Interesting observation, this is not the first "electronic device" like this that I have observed in the pictures. I did a better job of editing on the previous pictures. ;) I will ask George about it the next time we talk.

For those that were asking about the video clips that I'm getting these pictures from, I talked to Frank Baker and he only has the raw files that consist of many small video segments which would require lots of editing before they could be shown. The same files that I have. Nothing is available on U-tube to his or my knowledge. As you can see from the pictures I'm doing a lot of editing to the screen grabs before posting them here.

Enjoying them tremendously...thank you for your efforts!

Hi John,
Beautiful scene footage captures of George's layout for sure. I love seeing Jamie in the latest pics. you should show more of the whole grew who were there that day. Look forward to seeing the rest of the pics you edit. Thanx Thom...

Correction - I have 14 video clips of different lengths. I think one is of Thom and I trying to figure out how to turn the camera on. It was on the whole time. ;) ;D ;D ;D

Hi Thom
I'm glad you are enjoying the pictures. It sure took me awhile to get to this project. I'm trying to find a good picture of each of us taken from the camera on the train. The big problem is that it's hard to see the faces on most of the pictures because the bright lighting below the valence make the dark lighting where the faces are very dark. We all should have done what Jaime did. ;) Everything I have done so far is from 2 video clips. I think I have 8 or 10 of them so there is much more to come. For those following along Thom was running the trains the day the video was shot, and I have some great audio of him getting instructions from George. Maybe a few of the pictures with hand gestures will be appropriate to post. ;) I do have a picture of Dan with a hand full of cash that deserves a good caption. More to follow - please stay tuned.

He sure did - come to think of it I have hundreds of layout pictures with Jaime in the background, from all over the country. I wonder how that happened.

I had cash? Must be from a fare..

John,
If I can jump in here with regards to Raymo and Money, two oxy-morons if ever I saw together. ha. I think this might be the view you were thinking of him with cash in hand, but really he's just got his arms crossed and his ID badge is just in his front pocket. I could be wrong here, you know better of what you saw of course. But the Peabody Taxi Driver is usually so broke, he can't pay attention. At least every time I ask him for money. (grin). Thanx Thom...

Thom
I have a picture where Dan has a handful of foldable green stuff - I decided to store all the photographs of our forum team in one place and have a section of the thread just for 1:1 people photographs. I'm going to continue around the layout where each video segment takes us and add "the forum members" section in-between two sections. I really like the way the layout looks from the "on the train" perspective.

Cheers, Mark.

I have been noticing the same thing. Viewing angle makes a big difference. These pictures are taking us into the model and sometimes that really works. It really helps to have great modeling. ;)

I have been preparing some pictures of the forum members that got in the way of the camera when we had this photo shoot back in 2016. Lots of pictures of F&SM fans having a great time taking pictures. I decided to start a different thread for the "1:1 people" pictures rather than post them here with the layout pictures. I really like the perspective that these pictures give of the layout and don't want to spoil it with our pictures guys. ;) So stay tuned for another thread. I will be continuing our travels around the F&SM here on this thread.

Another great photo.

I talked to George, yesterday, and he told me he is enjoying these photographs. He also said that he is generating a fix list that is prompting a few changes to the F&SM. The wires we saw in the pictures of Dovertown are from a signal detection system that was installed in the 80's. There is a sign on one of his buildings that is from the 60's that is being replaced with one that fits his time frame. Just to name a couple things we talked about.

Wonderful collection!
