I appreciate that folks are checking out this thread and thanks for the comments. I've been sort of teasing about this being just background buildings, because they are the background for a new neighborhood. Here's a sneak peak at the larger area:

#2
The rest of the background is provided by a FOS kit that includes three structures

I wanted this to be a little taller, so I made an exposed foundation, after all this is the back of the building. I used some printed texture of a block wall, and made a bulkhead (cellar door) out of pieces from the scrap box.

As you saw in the picture above, the 'back' side of the warehouse has a loading dock. It needs to fit up against the rail siding, so the roof must be wider. I added a piece of styrene to the half of the roof, thus:

I had a scrap piece of heavy paper with an embossed texture, so that will serve for roofing

Some shortcuts save time and are "good enuf" for now.

As you can see, I just did a basic paint job on these brick surfaces, with a wash to age the surface and bring out the details. I'm going to give you a Cliff Notes version of this build thread, because there are some of the folks on here who do such a marvelous job of the play by play details of their projects. You can see some of how I reinforced these structures:

I spray painted the interior of the wall with rattle can black. I have no plans to light these, but it makes the walls less translucent. There is a base plate for the structure, but it is just the outline of the walls. After I cut it in half, to make it more sturdy, I glued it to a piece of 1/8" craft plywood. After the walls were fastened I added a scrap of 1/2" plywood cut to fit inside the walls. This give the assembly more weight down low.

Well, I've had some vacant real estate on the layout for some time. Been playing with possibilities and letting ideas simmer, so it's time to move forward. I bought a Walther's kit, Reliable warehouse and storage.

After testing my plan with a cardstock mockup, I split the model in two, using the front and back to create two buildings:

Late check-in...Blame the time change.
I just had to shovel an inch or so of SNOW off the sidewalk, does something seem screwy with the calendar when you combine snow shoveling and setting the clocks ahead on the same day ?

Good morning, all.
Have some OJ and wake up.

Well, the one thing I DID NOT expect to see during a Las Vegas half time show was a marching band on the field. They even did formations (and spelled out USHER!)

Have a great day!

Modeling Wizardry / Re: Considering 3d printing

Bob, you might want to try out TinkerCad. It is free, runs in the browser, not as a stand alone application. Chrome is recommended for this. I have messed around just a little with this. My results have been mixed, but that is to be expected when just starting out.

When I had a finished file project, I sent it to my local library system, which has some tech labs in some locations. For just the cost of the filament, I got back printed objects. While I might consider buying a machine in the future, this is a great way to try out the process.

A quick look online shows that the Seminole County library has this service. Other folks check your locale. There are also 'Maker Spaces' that cater to hobbyists in their communities.

I'm eager to see what this topic will grow into.

Quote from: Janbouli on January 19, 2024, 02:13:04 PM-4 Celsius here , just googled to find that is 24,8 F.  What is F based on , 0 deg C is the freezing temp of water, and 100 C is boiling water.

Jan, if I remember my science lessons, Fahrenheit (yes, the scale is named for him) picked 100 degrees as the temperature of the human body (he was off a little) and zero was as cold as he could get with a mix of water, ice, and salt. Celsius did his work many years later and had better instruments.

Good Morning, all

White stuff falling from the sky here in Cleveland...

In response to Jim's questions;

Should the Forum be promoted at swap meets or train shows? Would this get more visitors?

Should we have a wider focus, e.g. I have been active with a preservation group for the last year, is there interest in more info about the actual prototype, both historically and in museums, rail fanning, and excursions? Reading Bob, would you like some photos of a Rambles loco that will soon return to steam?

Just some questions, IMHO the Forum does an excellent job in the topics currently active and I enjoy all the content being posted.

Late response, but I love the photo at Tom's. Hi to all the Florida crowd from frigid Ohio.

Jan, if you keep bringing up the topic of (real) football, I may have to sing...

Ajax, voor de Wereld Cup,
 and repeat

Cloudy today, but we may get snow tonight.
Took down the outdoor Christmas lights, something I didn't want to do during those rainy days we had.
Will be spending tomorrow at the roundhouse...

Kit Building / Re: FOS freebie and new tools

The pictures of the bracing are really helpful, since I have this kit as well. The thin laser-cut details like doors and windows can be a real challenge as one tries to keep the structure strong and square.

Wish her a Happy Birthday, Bob.

Take her out to dinner and a show!

Make the most of it, and you won't even notice the day is so short!
