Title: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on November 17, 2016, 10:36:16 AM
My new Norwegian layout is inspired by three cruises that we have made recently to this wonderful country.

By necessity most of the structures will be have to be scratchbuilt. I intend populating the new exhibition layout with structures from various parts of Norway modelled from photos I have taken while on the cruises. So the layout will not be just one place but a composite of Norwegian architecture. Already I have built 8 additional scratch built houses reduced in size to force the perspective - see my other topic "norwegian houses".

The only exception to this scratch build is a model of Hell Station. The station is located some 30 kms from Trondheim and NMJ Skyline Models offers a very nice resin model of the station.

However I was only able to obtain the 1950's version which was finished in a drab cream with blue windows. As I am modelling the present day I just had to repaint it........

I found that I could push out the windows (which are metal) by carefully using a piece of dowel. I cleaned the glue adhesive off and save most of the acetate. I then sprayed the windows white. The whole building except the roof was then sprayed with Humbrol Sand 63.

I then painted the doors which are molded on the model white as well as the gables. The major task appears to be repainting the frames maroon. I am using Phoenix Precision P116 BR Coach Crimson.

It is going to take some time but I think it will be worth it in the end.

I also intend scratch building the freight shed which has this wonderful sign - HELL GODS- EXPEDITION. The meaning in Norwegian is slightly different - Hell in Norse means Cave and the rest means freight handling.

Nice work Mike.....I'll be watching.  8)

I'm still no where near close to starting Twin Mills, but I have been having a ball reading the instructions and designing the area of the layout where it, and its support structures, will live.  ;D ;D ;D

I'll be watching your progress, Mike.

I've been to Hell - back in 1988.  I had no idea it was coming until I looked out the window of the train and saw the station sign.  The devil was sitting on a luggage trolley - he was wearing a straw hat.

Stay safe.

Thanks Tom.

A big parcel of scale wood arrived yesterday from Northeastern. Yippee!!!

Now I can start scratch building the Norwegian structures.

I will start with the freight shed that stands at Hell Station. I have a colour picture of the building and I was trying to size it for HO use. I hit on the idea of reducing the picture in size on my photocopier until I could stand a HO scale Preiser against the doorway. Here is a picture of the original with the reduced size one and a little white figure. The reduction I used was 69% but it will vary depending on the size of the original. I have tried the same scheme with a picture of a shop in Bergen and that had to be reduced to 49% to match the pedestrian in the photo.

There has been a lot of modelling done already for this layout - the Bergen Houses, the norwegian homes etc on other threads.

But now it is getting serious. The layout has been invited to the Eurorail Exhibition in the Birmingham area the end of September 2019.
So I while am still undecided how the track plan will work, the main deciding feature is will it fit into the car? On that basis I received today a large pack of baseboard kits from Tim Horn Baseboards. These are the scenic/photo variety and will initially build into a 11ft by 2ft scenic area.
Here are the boards awaiting attention.

I have started building the first board. This board is 4ft by 2ft. The holes are all pre-drilled and I have added the long centre spline to the three shorter pieces. I have used a liberal dose of Hard as Nails to glue these together.

I love Mrs. C.!

No way my babe would allow that even with newspaper. I had to build my own 20 X 50 building so I could spill glue on the carpet.

Jan these are very well made. Counter sunk holes have been pre-drilled for the supplied screws. My electric screw driver has gone caput so I am buying a new one tomorrow.
In this series of photos you can see how one board , the left hand end,  goes together. Obviously this is test run since it is easier to glue and screw at the same time.

Here is the first board nearly completed. There are 50+ pre-drilled counter sunk holes in this board and my new electric screwdriver came in handy. The fit is very precise and the board looks great in the flesh. I am not going to fix the front fascia or light bar to the board yet as this will impede my modelling efforts in laying the track or scenery.

Love how well they look Mike , but correct me if I'm wrong , these are 3 modules so the price is about 400 pounds correct? I would look for something like this in Netherlands or Germany anyway, because of shipping would probably be expensive too.

Yes £408 which included postage and 2 pairs of metal dowels (£18). They come with wooden dowels which are perfectly OK for home use but I prefer metal ones for exhibitions. The kits are supplied with all the screws, panel pins, bolts and the holes are all pre-drilled. This is a really quality product and I am very impressed. I will use them again on future projects.
A friend of mine Graham Muspratt used a 5ft x 1ft board for his new exhibition layout Canute Road - £120 inc. postage.https://grahammuz.com/category/canute-road-quay/

When a plan does not go to plan. The boards should have fitted the car. I thought the boards were 61mm high but they are 71mm high. They will not fit! :-[
So I have ordered some more, this time 61 mm high but unfortunately only 18 inches wide rather than 24 inches. So less real estate to work with. I am committed to exhibit at the European Railways Association show in September. So the show must go on. The other boards will have to be used as small dioramas instead. So more modelling.................. ;)

Well I am back in action. A new set of boards that will this time fit in the car! The two main scenic boards give a total of 10 feet by 1.5 feet. The fiddle yard (not shown) in these pictures measures another 5 feet by 1.5 feet and will provide 5 storage tracks off-stage and a turnaround for the Faller bus.
Here are the boards set up in Mrs C's lounge. The large hole in the first picture is for the Bergen houses/ Magnorail peddling cyclist module and a harbour scene.

Thanks Curt and John,
There has been a lot of armchair planning going on. Basically how to fit a gallon into a pint pot. I have a need to fit the new layout in one car. Mrs C has said no to me owning a van! I have accumulated several Norwegian models (13+locos)  which I want to operate (play with) on the new layout. A Norwegian hi-speed train measures 52 inches long and other typical trains are not much less. Fitting these into a believeable space with a maximum length of just 120 inches is the challenge. However I think I've cracked it and now it will be full speed ahead.............

Before I can start laying any track or turnouts I need to align the three boards by fitting dowels at each end.

At the end of each board are holes for the dowels. The kit comes with wooden dowels that fit in these pre-drilled holes. The wooden spacers are to be glued into the holes. Then metal engineers dowels can then be fixed into position with screws. The dowels are male and female and allow the boards to be correctly
aligned when the boards are set up at shows.

The metal dowels have been fitted between the two scenic boards and bolts have been used to fit them together.I have fitted two pieces of 1mm plasticard within the gap. Track will be laid over the boards and then cut with a slitting disc.By using the plasticard the gap in the tracks will be that bit closer and look much better.

Planning the layout is a thought provoking exercise.
Given the boards are just 18 inches wide, I am planning what can be done at the depot end. From the front of the layout there will be a road for the Faller vehicles. Next a fence separating the road from the railway. Next two passenger tracks separated by an island platform terminating at the station with two lighted buffer stops. Consideration has to given that catenary posts and wires have to be fitted above both lines. Moving towards the backscene there will a freight siding with a loco releaseand runaround loop. Two medium radius turnouts have to be fitted with DCC Concepts Cobalt IQ digital motors. A magnet has to be fitted under the track to allow uncoupling of the loco. A lighted buffer stop and catenary posts and wire have to be considered. Notwithstanding all these considerations I would ideally like an embankment leading into the backscene..............
Here is the longest freight loco at 12 inches - a venerable EL12.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on April 14, 2019, 06:18:10 AM
The pencil marks are the footprint for the depot and I would not want the track to encroach on the road behind the depot too much.

Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on April 14, 2019, 06:23:26 AM
I made a jig from plasticard of the area taken up under the board by the turnout motor. Space is tight but I think I can just fit it in before a crosspiece. With these modular boards moving crosspieces is just not an option. They tend to determine the position of turnouts and consequently the length of tracks.

It's going to look great I'm sure,  but it sounds complicated to plan it out.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on April 14, 2019, 11:48:54 AM
Thanks Curt I hope so.
Next I drilled the holes for the turnout motor and the wires from the turnout. I also drilled a rectangular hole for the uncoupling magnet. This is buried in the hole supported by a piece of plasticard glued to the underside of the board with Thixofix. The magnet is the same width as the board so it sits neatly below the track and will not be seen once the track is ballasted. I tested a couple of tank cars just to make sure I had the magnet the correct way round.

The layout is 15 feet long based over three boards. The left hand board is the non-scenic fiddle yard (not shown in these pictures that follow). It generates trains into the middle and right hand scenic boards depicting a branch line terminus station and a freight siding with a run around. I have been concentrating on the link between the two middle boards. I have completed the copperclad ties linking the top freight siding from the three way turnout. The lower two spurs have had their plastic ties cut away in readiness for the next step.
Mike
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on May 07, 2019, 10:34:32 AM
A wooden piece of ply is used under the copper clad ties to bring the track to the same level as that under the foam insulation. I have slit the wooden inlay already and glued copper clad ties to it using Thixofix. The ties themselves have been soldered to the rail. A slit has been cut in each copperclad tie to prevent a short.
I have built a passenger platform from an Auhagen plastic kit. It is 18 scale high and placed centrally between the two passenger tracks. Lighted buffer stops will be added at a later stage. For operational interest I want the arriving loco to detach from it's train using Kadees and a under track magnet. Another loco will then back into the station and hook up to the train. Research with a rake of coaches dictates that the track with the shallowest curve will allow this to take place.

Thanks Tom.
The process continues with drilling holes through the baseboards for the track feed droppers which have been soldered to the underside of the tracks.  A messy job is the cutting of the baseboard for a magnet on the middle track. Once the hole was made I added some plasticard glued to the underneath of the board. I use Thixofix a rubber cement similar to a Walters product. The Bachmann magnet is then glued into the hole.

Checking the soldered lengths of rail that will form the two passenger tracks, I found the flux used in soldering had left traces of blue residue. I used a cotton bud dipped in white vinegar to remove all traces of the flux before the next steps.

Hurray the station track is in and the copperclad ties are glued across the two scenic boards. I plan to slit the rails with my Dremel tomorrow in order to separate the boards. The combination of these soldered copperclad ties together with the cabinet makers dowels will ensure that the tracks will always be perfectfully aligned when the boards are bolted together.
The space at the end of the platform will have to be extended with a scratchbuilt curve. I intend making that out of plasticard to match the rest of the platform.

All the track is in and wired up and better still it all works. I have painted the five track fiddle yard black and the rest of the track in the scenic part of the layout has also been painted. Now I have to ballast everything.

Apologies for this as I am sure most people know how to ballast. However when I joined the hobby I found it a chore until I learned how to. So here goes.......... :-\
Before I add the ballast to the track I have learned to plug the holes in the baseboard that I made when I fed my track droppers to the bus underneath. I just use masking tape.  If I did not do it I would have holes in the ballast and quite a lot on the carpet underneath.

Post by: madharry on June 09, 2019, 09:02:03 AM
Next I add some tape to each edge of the rail so I have nice ballast shoulders.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on June 09, 2019, 09:06:03 AM
I mist water on to the ballast with a mixture of water and "hydrous wetting solution". A little goes along way and I probably use too much concentrate.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on June 09, 2019, 09:08:20 AM
Then using a pipette I carefully add diluted PVA to the shoulders of the ballast and this wickes through. The result hopefully is a well groomed piece of ballasted track.

The ballasting has been completed. In the end I had to mix three colours to acheive the effect. The overhead electicification is causing big delays in moving forward. My norwegian fleet includes five diesels but the rest (nine) are electrics. I have tried using Dapol masts. These are made of plastic and tend to bend as the pan on the loco rides underneath on the the wire. The pans on all my locos are at different heights depending on the strength of the spring used on the models. I have looked at altering the pans to a standard height. But this is a drastic step too far at this stage as it will reduce the future value of the model if I decide to sell it at a future date. I have noticed that model magazines sometimes publish electic layouts with all the pans in the lowered position. At the moment I cannot complete the scenery on the layout before the masts and wire are positioned. Hmmm.........

Love how the layout is coming along. Good tip on the wetting solutions for ballasting.  Have you thought about just altering just the spring in the pans?  That way you can restore them if you decide to sell.  Not all of them are easy to replace, but might be a thought.

Thanks Bob, Darryl and Karl for following. The ballasting turned out very well. I will look at the pans again and see if I can modify the springs. There is a need for an entry portal from the fiddle yard to ensure the pans are not too high as they meet the wires. Also where the two scenic boards join there is a need for two detachable  wire assemblies.............hmmm

I have bought a Peco OO Catenary System 12 Mast Pack LC-100. The wires crossing the two boards are the most critical as they will be have to be removable rather than soldered permanently. I have drilled two holes and placed two masts to test the installation.
Mike
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on June 29, 2019, 11:44:22 AM
Continuing........... Here are four masts erected over the join in the two boards. Peco currently only offer single masts so I have decided to just "wire" the two outside tracks for now. The inner track will be the domain of diesels. I have ordered some more masts and longer wire pieces now I am happy with progress. The masts are very strong once they planted and are made from nickel silver by Sommerfeldt for Peco. Wires either side of these masts will be soldered on as will the rest of the installation. However these two wires will be removable so I can set up the layout at exhibitions. My concern was that they would be too flimsy but that is not the case as the two locos can pass under them without dislodging the wires.

A quick update on the new layout. I have been busy with other things - a cruise, the holiday home and several exhibitions; but the first debut of Norge is 28 September so pressing on..................
The harbour walls are made of foamboard covered in DAS clay and then scribed by hand.

On the left hand side there is not a lot of clearance at the back between the backscene and the track. After a lot of head scratching I decided a thin stone wall was required. This was made from foamboard covered in 3D stone paper with a capping made from card and then scribed. I made 6ft of walling for approx. $3.00 and more importantly it weighs hardly anything.

To the left of the harbour scene is an empty space. I decided a row of brightly coloured shops modelled on those at Alesund in Norway would look appropriate. Most of the buiildings in Alesund are germanic in character and I decided to use some kits from Polish manufacturer Stangel. I have bought four and I have made the first one. These kits are made from strong card and with the instructions being in german are not for the faint hearted IMHO.

The harbour walls are very light and very cheap to make.

In the first picture the foamboard has had a light coat of DAS clay added. To aid adhesion I painted the foamboard with PVA first before applying the clay.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on August 26, 2019, 07:42:54 AM
Once the walls are dry, it is an easy matter of scribing them with a 11 blade to form stone blocks. There is no time limit on this as the clay does not seem to harden over time. The one in the picture is at least a week old and still very pliable.
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on August 26, 2019, 07:46:04 AM
Here is picture of the four stages of manufacture. The bottom wall is just foamboard. The second one has had the DAS clay applied. The third board has been scribed and the fourth has had a base coat of primer grey applied. The next stage will be detailed painting of the stones and applying weathering and seaweed etc............

The harbour walls can be scribed as hard as you like. This is what I am doing to make them look old. However sometimes you can go too hard. Where the point of the pencil is are three stones that literally came away. I used some PVA to reattach them. Ooops......

Time to finish the harbour. I cut a piece of MDF for the L shaped harbour. I needed a couple of supports to keep this in place and used some spare wood that had been hanging around for 20 years or so. I knew it would come in useful in the end. This was glued and clamped to support the MDF waterscene. I then dug out my acrylic paints and Mod podge.................

The harbour area needs some cobbles.

First I paint the area to be covered with neat PVA. Then I roll out some DAS clay with a rolling pin. I then cut the clay into nice rectangular strips. These are bedded down on the surface.
Mike
Title: Re: Norway layout by Mike Carter
Post by: madharry on September 05, 2019, 10:08:04 AM
This is then arranged on the plain wooden surface of the board which has been painted with PVA. Then using the point of a ball point with the refill removed I press into the clay. This looks like round cobblestones. Here is a picture of the harbour with some buildings positioned. Tip - there is no need to "cobblestone" under the buildings, which saves time. The cobblestones once dried will be painted various shades of grey and biege. The large hole at the front is for the lighting cable for a lighthouse which is yet to be scratchbuilt.............

Thanks very much Curt. With all the animations this is a fun layout. The radio controlled VW arrived today and I have my L plates up trying to drive the thing in straight line.I'm good on three point turns though..................

That will be a big hit at the shows and you could charge for driving that VW. Or add a period F1 car.
well off to watch FP3 the Qualifying for me

Just heard that Continental Modeller will be running a feature of the layout in April/May. Norge has 7 invites to forthcoming exhibitions and I have been press ganged into joining the Scandinavian Railways Society here in the UK. They gave free entrance for next 15 months.............

NICE!

How did the little VW work out on its new road? Any chance of a quick video?

No video footage so far. I had three young lads playing with it successfully. The 8 year old was best! Suffice to
say have bought another one - the van with caravan .I am very pleased with it and I needed to get another one before the drawbridge is raised on 31 October. ;) Mike
