Kit Building / Crocker Bros Feed Mill Sign
July 11, 2020, 11:23:22 AM
hi guys,
I bought the Crocker Bros kit on Ebay a while back and started building it,  but the sign is missing from the kit..
does anyone have this kit that they could take a straight - on photo of it and post it? --- I can resize it on my Inkscape program....
thanks!

this is what I chose- reading through the instructions it looks like this is a challenging little kit- lots of stuff in the box. My target is to start this weekend. First thing is to make some copies of the templates so I don't ruin them accidentally during the build process. perusing the instructions, it appears as the walls will be built in close to the same manner as I did with the Bartholow Coal build.  Being as this is a 40+ year old kit, the painting/staining instructions are out of date as I don't have any Floquil products left!

Kit Building / FSM Barnstead Lumber Build
October 21, 2019, 02:10:04 PM
Because I usually have several projects going on at a time to keep stimulated, I thought I would open another of my yellow boxes.  This is an old one- no laser cut walls here.... the window and door openings need to be "opened"..... there is a lot of stuff in this box, lots of castings.... things are organized well with all of the substructures individually bagged.  The instructions call for gluing the gable end pieces to the lower wall portion, but knowing me, I'll end up getting glue on the clapboard face and that will interfere with staining. So, the first thing I will do is stain the walls and strip wood with some AI and then do the gluing..... The base for this is 16" x 23", providing room for track to run in back. Because I will butt this diorama against my mainline already in place, I think I will knock off 2 inches from the width. Will put it on a wood base....

Kit Building / A "Grusom" experiment
August 18, 2019, 01:45:44 PM
ok,
I picked up this kit for $14.00 and just couldn't resist the challenge.  The thing is, these are the kits that I built when I was a kid on my crappy first layout,,,, which was a sheet of plywood with an oval track plan.
I'm looking at separating the two buildings,,, one of them I think is the old Machine Shop kit (maybe Atlas?)... the bottom of the molded base has the name "Pola" on it.....
The box tells me that the kit is already molded in colors so I don't have to paint it! Ha Ha.
I started out painting the walls with a dark red primer. I will do a mortar wash after.  I painted the roof piece with some dark gray primer and will do some acrylic washes/ powders.  The clear skylight insert material doesn't really fit properly so I will replace with regular clear acetate.  The window inserts are ok, mullions a bit thick but will be ok painted dark color.  The door is absolutely terrible so I will replace it with something......
I've seen this type of kit on the FSM,,,,, George put something similar to this on top of a large building!

Kit Building / SRMW Spencer Paper build
June 12, 2019, 08:07:19 AM
hello fellow modelers,
going to tackle the SRMW Spencer Paper Bag kit.  Its a big one.  The diorama is 2' x 2'... that is a lot of real estate so I am going to mess around with it to get it to fit my space.
I bought this kit when it first came out and I'm just opening it now.  Lots of stuff in the box. Unfortunately, it didn't take long to run into my first problem, and its a big one:  one of the walls was put into the laser upside down so the clapboard is facing the wrong way! @#$%!!!!!
After swearing a bit, I guess I gotta make a wall,,,,, I'm not too happy right now,,,,,

Kit Building / ITLA 3 in one kit
June 09, 2019, 11:29:39 AM

I probably should have done a proper build thread on this kit. I really like these kits and encourage people to give them a try.  this is the 4th ITLA (Imagine That Laser Art) kit that I've built and I came up with a technique that works for me and is super easy.  In two nights I'm almost finished with the kit and they make great background structures.
The first thing I do is all the painting.  the walls got sprayed with Rustoleum Ruddy Brown. I masked off the lower stone portion and painted the stones with craft paint after the primer dried.  for the pilasters I sprayed them with Camo Brown and then after that dried hit them with the Ruddy Brown. This will give you a subtle difference in color.  you have 3 choices in building this thing, I went with the L shape.  All the windows are sprayed with the Camo Brown, and the sills were sprayed with Camo Khaki and then some craft chalk paint.
before the windows and sills are installed, I hit the walls with Robert's brick wash and then wiped the wall down after. Any mortar wash would work...
The windows go in easily and then the sills. after that the pilasters are glued on and then the upper trim is glued on in layers. Again, super easy and the results are just fantastic.  the Back wall fits in the slots and does not have to be glued in, for removal if you want to light the thing later.....
The roof piece I covered with fine grit sandpaper and then glued that in place.
this is where I am now:

Kit Building / Bob's Bartholow Build
April 12, 2019, 11:23:56 AM
With Karl's build almost complete, I will post my thread on this build. I've been working on this at the same time Karl has been doing his.... I went with the prototype color of "red".....
So this thread will have pics that I posted in various daily "good morning" chat threads......

Ok, this is what I picked out for the challenge- not too big, not too small. The photos in the kit show a two color paint scheme, but what I want to do is make a dirty looking structure- figuring that a welding business would be on the dirty side.  I plan on placing this structure by the railroad tracks.  I want to try something different for the wall prep, and I am going with a single paint scheme: walls, doors, trim, windows will all be a dirty white.

Kit Building / Gibley's build thread
August 21, 2018, 06:13:08 PM

this is the kit from Bar Mills, a bit different type of kit as there is no clapboard walls. The walls is made from a type of cardboard. I find the cardboard very soft but it is easy to work with.
I read the instructions and immediately I'm not following them!  Old dog/new tricks type of thing, I guess.  The kit comes with shingle strips that are self stick.... instructions call for placing them on the walls before painting them. I do agree with the instructions regarding working on the walls while they are flat- before bracing is placed.
So, what I did was first spray the back of all the walls with flat black. Then I painted the bottom section of the walls with grimy black. Then I sprayed the shingle sheets with gray primer.  Then after that was dry I drybrushed some earth colored craft paint in vertical streaks- randomly. after that I applied white craft paint using a sponge.  When I attach the shingles, I will randomly take strips from the sheets as I apply them.... the walls have lines laser into them for shingle guides.... really nice thing to have!

Scratchbuilding / Fox Run Milling Scratch-build
June 12, 2017, 03:25:51 PM

Ok, here goes!  This will be a build thread on my attempt at scratch-building the FSM Fox Run Milling Structure.  I will change some of the things such as doors and window (size and type)- using what I have or am able to obtain.
First off I need to thank George P. for his help on the dimensions of the structure- I could not do this without his invaluable help-- he is a great guy!
I will try to present this as a bit of a "clinic", showing/explaining how I do things, ect.
As far as tools go, you must have a scale ruler and, IMO, one of these low profile squares from Micro-Mark.  I like using a mechanical pencil because it makes a nice thin line.  The other tip I can give is to think in HO scale feet.  A great thing to do is when you are out and about, measure the height of things in the real world such as loading dock height and width, ect.
So, I jumped in on this by measuring out the main walls on a piece of aged clapboard material.  I always measure, draw, and cut out windows and doors on the face side of the siding.  I know others cut out from the back, but IMO cutting out from the front keeps me from making mistakes, enables me to use the siding as leveling lines.  I use chisel blades in my X-acto knife and just recently started using the corner punch from Micro-Mark, which I really like and has sped up the cutting time.
ok, here goes:

Scratchbuilding / Card-stock Scratch-build
May 01, 2017, 06:25:06 PM
Ok, I dont know how this is going to come out,
Its a copy of an FSM kit--- I am only going by photos so the measurements are different

Here goes:
Card-stock is cut and Liquitex stucco is applied with a stippling brush.....

Ok, I am lucky enough to have the dimensions and the instructions book to help me- so here goes!  I am not the fastest modeler, esp. in the summer- so I am not sure how long this will take me.  I am using Northeastern aged clapboard and windows that I had, also from Northeastern scale lumber.  I have some freight doors from Rusty Stumps and a water wheel kit that I bought years ago from BEST, although I don't know why I got it!  This is the first time using the little 90 degree punch I got from Micro-Mark... works pretty good...

I maybe the only one out there that does this: I don't mark or cut from the backside of the clapboard. I prefer to lay things out and cut openings on the face of the material.  The clapboards help in keeping things straight. I have never split or marred the face of the clapboard doing this, and I think it helps me in avoiding mistakes.  So... Here I go....

Scratchbuilding / The Granby Bates Project
August 12, 2015, 06:56:02 PM
Ok, so here is where I am at with my scratchbuild attempt at kind of re-creating the FSM Alan Deeks structure.  I'm only going to do 3 sides because I want to set it back a bit on the layout.
