Kit Building / Period Miniatures Combination Station
January 10, 2022, 07:05:52 AM
So after a very long time of doing nothing in modeling I started a kit build , nothing spectacular but it will do for now .

Photo on the box, I have no clue how old this kit is , black and white photo , not laser-cut and metal cast doors , windows and details.

Instructions are okay, they could use a few photo's or drawings more.

The parts are neatly packaged. As I said not laser-cut , if you make scans of the wood parts you could easily build one or two more of the same buildings , using other doors and such, these older kits are not much more then a scratchbuild.

Before cutting I tend to tape the backside with masking tape , it helps prevent cuts tearing or breaking and if this does happen it's easier to fix because the piece stays in place.

Cutting out doors and windows , I cut so that the openings are just a little smaller then the object is , then sanding them to a tight fit.

After cutting I started with bracing.

Kit Building / RS Laser 1st Bank in N-scale
May 13, 2020, 05:26:24 PM
It's still nice and cool in my workshop , so I'll just keep building small structures for one of the towns on my layout. This is RSLaser's 1st Bank .
The contents.
Primed with gray primer from spray can.

Several sprays later so that the paint gets into the mortar lines somewhat, the brick walls are definitely more detailed then those from the Monster kits.

Decided on doing a different technique for the walls , using Faber Castell Albrecht Durer Water Color Pencils , these can also be used on plastic kits.

Several color's later. I hold the pencils almost horizontally to only color the surface of the bricks.

Then painted the lintels with Tamiya Medium Gray using a 3/0 synthetic brush , good quality so that even though it's very small it can pick up quite enough paint to do a lintel in one stroke.

Happy I ordered these just before they closed down along with some other kits and some walls for scratchbuilding.

The Manual , the kit was not in a box but in a plastic bag.
The parts , all neatly sealed in the plastic bag.

Started by adding the corners to the walls .

Connecting walls , using the magnetic jig to get things perfectly square.

Made a small mistake on the corners , the corners of the back wall should be even with the side wall, fixed that by gluing a piece of corner on top, as you can see in the next photo.

Connected all the walls.

Next up roof supports.

Your own text on the sign , it reads Jan & Martha's Toys  , my parents names.

Kit Building / RS Laser The Grove Building

It's been a while that I've done a build , finally found my way to the workbench again.
The box.

The color instructions.

The Contents

Cutting bracing.

Bracing is not parallel with the top.

Primer gray from a rattlecan.

Bricks done with several color's of artistsmarkers.

Brushed with white chalkpowder.

Kit Building / RSlaser Harris Door Manufacturing
February 02, 2019, 04:16:20 PM
Another RSlaser structure , we need more N-scale manufacturers like Rich and Darryl to name a couple.
The box. Always excellent packaging .

This is a backdrop structure with a little depth , the main part is the front wall.

Right away I had a small issue with the dormers , they are very vulnerable, I had to do something about that before they would break off.

I taped them with masking tape , and cut around the dormers.

This would be enough to keep them safe until the windows and the window frames were assembled, once those are in place the dormers won't be vulnerable.

The I braced the whole wall , leaving space for the horizontal bracing provided in the kit.

Then I spray paint the inside black.

While waiting for paint to dry , decals to set etc. on the Wagon company build I started this lovely little cardstock build.

The envelope with the cardstock parts inside.
The parts are cut out of cardstock, you only have to cut 1 straight line of the parts to loosen them from the board.

Some of the windows with the glazing .

Build up and glazing of the shopwindows.

Everything is built up layer by layer.

Then installed to the main frame.

The box.
The manual.

Some of the contents.

Some of the parts in the original box weren't quite right , so Rich sent me the correct parts , because these were in an envelop without any worth on it they arrived earlier then the box because of customs and VAT.

The decal sheet, when I first saw them I thought Rich had made a mistake and sent me the H0 decals, they are quite large for an N-scale structure.

Kit Building / Lunde Studios City Bus Terminal
December 16, 2018, 10:29:23 AM
It's been a while since my last build , and I am not anywhere near the part of my layout where I plan this , but someone at nScale.net asked for some Lunde Studio kits, so I'm building the Bus station now.
Box and contents.
Resin parts in color.

I will be painting some but not all parts , just weathering some of them.

Instructions with plenty of photographs , the signs are not decals , not a problem but maybe the BUS signs should have been decals. Don't think I will be using the Snailways signs.

Most of the parts are taped to the cardboard , I have no idea why these parts were hotglued , not handy.

First task , cutting and sanding off al the sprue parts.

Cutting out flash, easy because it is very thin.

Kit Building / Build threads for newbies
December 13, 2018, 07:49:55 PM
There are maybe 100's of build threads on this forum , I think it would be great if we had a list of build threads that would accommodate beginner modelers, but also experienced modelers.

This first post will have a list of links to How To's

So which of your threads do you think a newbie can learn most from, for instance describing what paints to use , glue to use , easy weathering techniques, you get the picture.

I have been googling for a photo of an interior wall for my Rail Scale Models engine shed , it's to small to do a real interior , also because of the bracing needed . So I thought I would do a photo wall , but I can't find anything with a wall straight on , all photo's seem to be on an angle. Anyone out there have such a photo , or could make me a photo of their interior that I could use?
#13
Thought I'd show the finished structure , all photo's taken with my new camera , I will be experimenting with the camera to get deeper focus  ( lighting, diaphragm ) , but I already love it . The only thing worrying me is that the photo's are now not only larger then life but also much sharper then the naked eye can see , there's no hiding small mistakes anymore  ;)

Kit Building / Perplexing Puzzles Plus kits
April 29, 2018, 05:20:21 PM
Another new N-scale manufacturer ( well new to me )

The kits from Perplexing Puzzles Plus  come in plastic sealed bags. I ordered several at a time and they were shipped in a well protected box.

These are the parts , the lasercutting is crisp and well done , 2 small points of critic , the wood used for the windows, doors and trim is a bit on the thick side , I'll show later when installing the windows, and the connections to the sprue are left to wide , so you have to use more force then you would like to cut parts off the sprue, I would lasercut right down to just having the part barely hanging on to the sprue.

The next 3 photo's show the walls in different stages of painting after I had primed them with a tan/gray primer from the rattle can. I chose for milder color's then the fire truck red shown in the manufacturers photo.

The assembled windows , as I said the wood used is  a bit too thick , especially the frame sticks out of the wall a bit too much.

Windows assembled in the walls , It looks good to me , but with thinner material for the frames would look even better.

Arches for the doors.

Doors installed and glazing done , there is plastic glazing in the kit but I wanted to try out a new product I had bought , same principal as Micro Klear but thinner and the result looks better. The product is Glue 'n Glaze from Deluxe Materials

Kit Building / Rail Scale Models
February 22, 2018, 05:45:29 PM
This is the build of Rail Scale Models Branchline Coalhouse. A new manufacturer for me so I am starting with one of the smaller simpler structures to get to know how Steve's kits build .
I'll place all my Rail Scale Models builds in this thread.

The box.

Manual , contents list and a general manual how to work with lasercut kits. Very well done.

The contents, walls , lasercut doors , plastic glazing , roof material and even the bracing is provided.

There is a bracing diagram in the manual , I did some additional horizontal bracing , you can never have to much bracing.

Peel and stick doors , I like peel and stick in N-scale , makes life so much easier.

A wash of A&I , I did the extra bracing after I saw there was some slight warpage.
#16
N-scale does have it's advantages , a much larger building for the challenge  ;D

The box.

The contents

28 page manual with many color photo's.

While the walls are drying from there coat of paint I'll start with windows.
#17
My first CCK kit in H0 , here's the box.

And here are the contents.

The instructions , a bit minimal , but I had no problems building this kit.

Started with bracing the walls.

An A&I wash.

Followed by painting the walls.

Kit Building / Bar Mills Majestic Hardware in H0
March 18, 2017, 04:05:07 PM
Now that Karl is building in N-scale , I thought I'd do the same build in H0

The parts of Bar Mills Majestic Hardware in H0

Painted the walls Vallejo Middle Stone.

Trim , windows and doors are Vallejo Amarillo Panzer

Bracing. I did the bracing near the corners so that it would aid me when assembling walls.

Concrete foundation in Polyscale Aged Concrete.

Corner trims.

Assembled window frames and doors.

Seeking Kit... / 30's 40's gas pumps
February 10, 2017, 04:45:30 PM
Not looking for a gas station , but for 1 or 2 old gas pumps in H0, for a friend. Does anyone have 1 or 2 they could put in an envelop and send to me. I would pay for the pumps and the shipping of course.
#20
A small gas station for a Clay Center scene.

The box and it's contents.

Started with the billboard. Everything is painted using spray cans from the cheap store.

Lots of peel and stick so the billboard is done in a jiffy.

The clapboard walls are a little fragile as we will see in the next photo's.

Fixed using transfer tape.

Some wood to brace and place the walls on the base.

Then put the walls together.
