Great start, Karl. I'm following along, too.  I've always loved seeing this kit, but my layout theme is seaside, so this was too much of a stretch.  But I'm really eager to see what you do with it.

Hi Guys:

Bunk #1 if finished. Added a few signs and some newspapers. I started this June 13th so it took about a week to finish. Here's a few pics. Hope she looks OK. Brett said you could ad A piece of wood instead of cap shingles so that's what I did. A flat piece and a ridge piece on top. Got this idea from another kit I built years ago. I may put a rolled roof on bunkhouse #2.

Hi All:

Both bunkhouses are finished. Bunkhouse # 2 doesn't have much detail against it as it goes on the ground around it. I decided to go with  rolled roofing to give it some  variety. Hope it looks ok.

I think you did a fantastic job getting the wood to look very realistic. I always like greyish wood that just aged over time and you can still see the woodgrain.

As for different roofs, this is even better because as times change materials, styles, and methods change. I love to show additions to buildings by changing the roof style.

"Paper Creek" had great products!  It's a shame that line didn't continue.  I color the edges of the corrugated panels with a dark grey (not black) artist marker, it covers the white paper and helps set off each panel.

Great structures, Karl. This is building into one heck of a scene.  I didn't realize there were so many structures in the kit. You've kept a really nice consistency in their appearance throughout the build that keeps them looking like they all belong together so far.

Hi All:

Been working on the Tool Shed. All separate boards. Stained with A&I first then dry-brushed with Floquil Zinc Chromate as I did not have the color Box Car Red in the instructions. Here's A few photos. Hope it looks OK.

Looking good Karl.  Are you building a diorama with all these kits or are they destined to be a new town on your railroad?

Hi Bruce:

Thanks for the compliment.

I'm building these kits for a friends 35 X 45 foot layout. He requested I not put them into A Diorama so they can be installed on the layout the way he wants them to be.

Hi All:

finished the Tool Shed yesterday. I really liked this one because of all the detail it has. I painted the large pipe rust. I didn't care for it so I painted over them with black. The rust showing through the black was some type of chemical reaction. I liked it so I left it that way. Hope it looks OK.

I've always wondered why tool sheds are always made just a little bit too small to hold all the junk that goes inside them.  Your shed is an excellent example and I really, really like it.  It looks like it would fit nicely next to the Midlands engine facility on the Atlantic & Southern RR.

The tool shed looks terrific, Karl!

The red tone sets it apart nicely from the norm.  I really like that chemical reaction on those pipes too.

Cheers, Mark.

It's not that tool sheds are too small.  It's that "mess expands to exceed the space available".  If you build a bigger tool shed, you'll just get more junk.

That's some pretty impressive modeling Karl.  Everything you've built looks fantastic.

I am curious on how you are able to paint so many castings in what appears to be a short period of time.  These always seem to take forever for me to do.  Any hints you would be willing to share?

Hey Bruce:

Thanks for the great compliment. Most of the castings are items that are wood based. I tape them to a pice of plywood and spray paint them with Krylon aomouflage #4295 sand. Looks just like Floquil Earth. Then all the details are painted by hand. Metal barrels are all painted by hand. Some are painted one color and others are painted red or green with a white middle band.

Thanks for the info Karl.  I will have to give that a try.  I've been dinking around with an O Scale structure that is in need of detail parts.  I guess there's another order to Rusty Rails in my future.
