Title: A "Grusom" experiment
Post by: rpdylan on August 18, 2019, 01:45:44 PM
ok,
I picked up this kit for $14.00 and just couldn't resist the challenge.  The thing is, these are the kits that I built when I was a kid on my crappy first layout,,,, which was a sheet of plywood with an oval track plan.
I'm looking at separating the two buildings,,, one of them I think is the old Machine Shop kit (maybe Atlas?)... the bottom of the molded base has the name "Pola" on it.....
The box tells me that the kit is already molded in colors so I don't have to paint it! Ha Ha.
I started out painting the walls with a dark red primer. I will do a mortar wash after.  I painted the roof piece with some dark gray primer and will do some acrylic washes/ powders.  The clear skylight insert material doesn't really fit properly so I will replace with regular clear acetate.  The window inserts are ok, mullions a bit thick but will be ok painted dark color.  The door is absolutely terrible so I will replace it with something......
I've seen this type of kit on the FSM,,,,, George put something similar to this on top of a large building!

Yep - I know what you mean. For me, it's the Superior Bakery by Con Cor/AHM/Revell/who knows. I remember building it as a pup... used Goo adhesive with plenty of strings all over the walls and windows. Molded in blue, it needed no painting  :). At the time, I loved it. I still have it somewhere. I remember seeing it in the last few years and it looked like crap. Someday I will get another one and see what I can do with it. Nice building, really. Lots of decent wall detail.

ah....memories.

I think this part of the kit was a Tyco Machine Shop,,,,, I know that I built it as a kid.
I did a mortar wash, will continue to clean that up a bit more.  the roof has two holes on it for a plastic sign, so I will cover those with some roof "patches".  The other side of the roof has a hole for a vent, I think I will cover that with a straw for a small smoke stack.  The base is useless with its molded in details... plus I think it is too tall. maybe just some strip wood painted concrete to represent a poured concrete pad.
The other structure has a loading dock with roof and supports. As these are all plastic and look awful, they will be replaced with wood and corrugated roofing....
how can I go wrong for $14? ha ha!

thanks Tom, believe it or not I got to this point in a couple of hours this morning. Bouncing around doing my Spencer build, the layout scenery, a Jordan build, and this kit!
