Hello everybody.
I've spent the last year to build kit (FSM Bartholomew coal and SWSM loco and service shop), then I've decide that enough is enough, and time is due to make something different and return to my first love : Scratchbuilding.
Sooner this year one of us have post this pictures (I can't remenber who, but I think it's Raymo. If no, I'm apologize). I found that this pictures was very inspiring and decide to make a little dio with it. Nothing really big, jsut the three building and a pieces of road. before begining i've made a small research to found where are this building in Scranton to obtain more picture (thank you google MAP). I've finally found that's the 310-312 N Washington st. in Scranton.

As al my scratchbuild project, it's begin with a good draw, during year I've make the draw with my pencil, a rule, and a square, but since some year I use Corel draw to do it and the numerous template used to build the building. At this time the draw is not finish. In fact just the front of the building are drawing, and the template to make the first.

For this one I've planned to used MonsterModel brick sheet. to avoid to loose my stock, I've cut all the part in cardboard to test the fitting.

after what I've begin the construction of the building

And begin to add the several layer of brick.  In some place, ehere the brick isn't visible, the layer is in cardboard. Here's the avancement at this time.

Stay tuned. to be continued.

March 15, 2021, 06:04:56 PM
Hi Everybody,
I've spent the last seven month to assemble the Sierra West scale model Loco and Service shop kit.
What a funny and very amazing kit.
I took the opportunity to repaint and customize a little bit my twenty-five year old MDC roundhouse Shay. ANd make a first try to paint a cloudy sky for backdrop following the excellent video tutorial by Jasan Jensen.

Kit Building / Mackenzie milling co - FSM kit 215
June 05, 2019, 06:54:57 PM
Hi all,
I've finish last week the Mackenzie milling  FSM kit 215, but I was unable since the last upgrade to post anything on the forum. It seem that this problem was resolve, so here's a brief story of the assembly of this kit and a lot of pictures.
I've bought this kit there's few years ago after seeing the beautiful work that our friend John Siekirk made with it.
Unfortunately in the kit I've bought, some original casting were remplace by poor casting (the two chimney) and some are lack (some windows). So, I've scratchbuild all these pieces with Tichy windows, and some Monstermodel Brickwork. I keep the jordan vehicle for an other use, and scratchbuild the truck with some Home resin casting  (from my father) from wheelworks model, spare part from jordan model, some piece of evergreen styrene and B.E.S.T casting.
The scenery of this kit was very funny to do and I think contribue to a large part of the beauty of the model.
Here's the pictures

Dioramas / FOS Hill - Large Dio or Begin of a layout
December 31, 2017, 10:11:05 AM
Hello all,
As mentioned early, it's been 3 month that I'm working on a new scratchbuilding diorama. All have begin with the last limited edition kit from Foscale : the very inspiring bandit roots.
When the kit was sold, the rate between the Canadian and US dollars was  25 %, and if you add the shipping and custom duty, you have a kit at almost 500 $ CDN. It totally off my budget.
The more I thought about making it myself, the more the project grew with the addition of new ideas. Hence the idea of making a very large diorama in the only available space in my Home . This space is actually a triangle of 5 feet by 5 feet, and in the hypothenus  angle, the dio can have up to 2 feet deep ( so in fact we have an irregular pentagon). Here's the location :
.

.
Can we still talk about a diorama for something as big as 5 by 5? should not we talk about a start of a layout? The debate is open.
for the track, I'm very inspired by the left side of the top draw from this one that I've found on the net
.

.
The upper  track will be a large curve half masked in a tunnel that pass below the Fos Hill.
the 3 diagonal track will shortened and move to the right. The idea is to incorporate my RedHook Dio in this place, and incorporat two other dio ( Hooper's Oyester and Nolan Cannery) around that I spell The Oyster Bay that is located  between the Fos Hill and the RedHook Wharf.
Ok I Know it's a lot of stock in a small space...but the project can still evolve and I count on your advice to achieve it. It is this very evolutive character that makes me think that it is good for a diorama and not a layout that should necessarily be better planned from the start. That's all for the concept of this projet.
The second challenge is my new method to build the different building. no measurements are taken, everything is drawn to the scale for making template, that are glue on  wood before cutting. For all the draw and signage I use CorelDraw X7

Unfortunately, I've not take any picture during the scratchbuilding process of the first three building.

First Building : Callahan Machine tool.
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful building of the kit, lot of charactere. I've some difficulties to draw it, not being able to determine whether or not the wall next to the gas station is at an angle to the rest of the building rather than being square. Finally, I've opted for the option with angle, the shape of the final result is a little bit strange, but ad a lot of cachet. The signage are made with corel draw. what is interesting about this software is that you can open a picture and modify it quickly and easily ( stretch or reduce proprementally or not etc).
.

.
Second building : Burdick Oyster
An other Foscale kit that I would have liked to own. For this project I've decide to scratchbuild it inverse side  from the original. In the dio It will take place on other side of the street in front of callahan machine tool. The base stone work is a plaster mold from a NewEngland Brownstone product.  I would especially like to thank one of you who kindly sent me the posters I was missing.

Continue in a few... Tea time...

Hi everybody,

At the Begin of this Challenge, I've announced that I will build the Atlantic scale Models Dog Bar Lighthouse. But after 2 days to only see the content of the Box I've realised that I'm not in the mood to build a small Ocean seaside based dio. So I've return in my stash and found the FSM Houligan's Alley that I've Bought on E-Bay some years ago.  I know that I will probably not finish it for February 2017.. But.... the purpose is only to make a thread ans build something isn't it ?

So let's begin the story : first here's the 3 traditional pictures without whom a building thread shall not be a good building thread
The Box :

The Content of the box :

ANd the  Box of casting

As usual, the instruction are very clear and print  on  several unpractical format sheet ... But it's the Tradition.... and traditions are good things
I've constat that the precedent owner of the kit have keep the Tips sheet of the instruction. Fortunately, I've a copy of this precious sheet from an other FSM KIt that I've built some years ago.

FIrst I've begin by priming the casting. I've choose to prime them in 3 colors ( grey, red Oxyde and Earth) regarding the material of the casting : Red oxyde for the brick work, Grey for metal part and earth for wood part. SOme chimney and metal part are blakened with blackening agent.

Then I've begin the first building : Casey Woodworking Co.
The first task consist to glue the brick work casting in the whole of the wall. For those of us who still have bad memories of this Child game which consisted to put shapes in proper holes, and have stung crisis while the square refused to enter the hole in stars, there's nothing to worry about, the cast are perfectly identified on their back and on the template  ;D ;D ;D

then I've glu the bracing in place. As usual, the template are perfectly done and indicate the right position of each brace with some mesure that permit lately to assemble  the wall easely

to be continued 1/2

Dioramas / SWSM RailRoad Camp Dio
February 14, 2016, 11:28:32 AM
Hello All,
A brief history of this kit. I,ve purchase it from Sierra West as a special during summer 2014, and I've begin it slowly during the begin of spring of 2015 when I was trying to finish the Wrisley paper Dio. FInally I've totally abandonned the Wrislsey Paper Dio ( must be finished maybe this summer, when I can air out my condo when I will use clear resin.
I've decide to not publish any pictures during the construction of this kit ( but a lot of Picture was taken during this time) and after 9 month of effort here's the final result of this almost finish Diorama.
For conclue I want to said that Sierra West Scale Models Kits are a very nice and funny kit, that are not so difficult, but need a lot of work. But all this work needed are, in my opinion , 110 % pleasure.

Here's some pictures. More will coming later, for night view ( I've make the light in all the building).

Scratchbuilding / Old Squid Brewery Project
January 24, 2016, 11:34:22 AM
Hello All,

Since my SWSM Railroad Camp dio is almost finish, I've begin a new project for the port district of my futur layout . The building is largely (completely?) inspired by the Graves  building Kit from Barmills, and will be placed just at right of the Redhook complex.
After a little bit more of two years to just building kit, I've decide to reconnect with scratchbuilding and  a new challenge : plaster molding
First I've make a complete draw of all pieces needed with the maximum of accuracy. For that I've learn to use Corel Draw X7, and after some try, I've a lot of fun with it. Then I've printed the draw and glue them on 4 ply bristol, and cut them to make template.

Then, I've used this template to make mold in styren, All the mold are 1/4" deep.  I haven't inventted anything in the conception of these molds, because I have followed the instructions given by Doug Foscale in one of his video (volume 6 : Masonry wall technique)

then I've filled the mold with plaster of Paris, after few research I,ve found the perfect recipe for plaster molding, with virtually no losses
first we must calculate the volume of the mold. the volume of the mold divide by 2 give the volume of water needed. Finally the volume of water multiplied by 3 give the volume of plaster needed. You can now fill the mold with this right quantity of plaster at the right consistency. Then shake the mold to remove any bubble air and let it dry.

When the plaster is dry, you can remove it from the mold. Casting on a styrene sheet Is not recommended for long and narrow pieces because they are carving during drying process. I think that my styrene sheet isn't rigid enough. SO after lost and broke many pieces ( about 20 % of the pieces needed), I've decide to make the mold on a glasses, that give a better result due to his rigidity.

Finally I've begin to engrave the brick on the wall, and sanded some angle on different section of the wall. Here's a pictures of all the plaster wall of this project.

To be continued.

Dioramas / RedHook Wharf Scratchbuild Dio
January 25, 2015, 11:33:53 AM
Hello all,

In 2012, I've failed to obtain a copy of this wondeful kit due to thelimited quantity avaible and my lack of speed to order it. So I've decide to scartchbuild all the 8 building and add a copy of an other mythic kit (that I've scratchbuild too) : the Emporium Seafood for doing a big Dio.
You can follow all the effort needed to do this an the mrr kit forum  here : http://kitforums.com/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=7738
The construction of the building have take almost a year, And i've wor 3 other month on the Dio. In  february 2014, I,ve stop all the work on the dio, becaus I was bored and don't want to see it anymore for several month.
Finally I've almost finished it during the christmas holiday.
Some details will be add in futur.
Here's some pictures. Hope you enjoy, and as always, feel free to comments.

Kit Building / SRMW - Wrisley Paper
June 29, 2014, 05:10:19 PM
Hello All,

There's four years ago, I've buy at very reasonable price (i.e the same that orignal) the Wrilsley Paper Co Kit from South River Modelworks. It was the second kit from SRMW I've buy, (the first was the Robinson electric, that I've buy for my father 60th birthday), but the first buy for me, and when I've opened the box, I've found that I did not yethave the skills to carry out this project. At this time, I was only a scratchbuilder for several years, but have make a break during many years (8), and Have build only one kit in my life and no dio. So I've closed the box and begin to try to learn the skills I need.
Four years later, I'm ready to begin this kit and make the dio.
This thread have many purpose :
1. Give me the first kick to begin this kit
2. Share with you this experience
3. Receive your comment to keep improving (so don't hesitate to comment, critic)
4. Practice my poor english.

Okay here's the two traditionnal pics :
The Box

and his content :

As you can see, there's a lot of stock, and I must confess that the urethane casting are incredible.
That's all for today,
Stay tuned, to be continued

February 22, 2014, 09:34:36 AM

Hello All,
Here's my thread for this contest.
Last spring I bought this kit, but I've never take time to build it.  The reason is very simple : Too busy with my Red Hook Scratchbuild project (not finished yet).. SO this challenge is a very good opportunity to build it.
Here's the 2 traditionnal pictures before begin to build it

The cityfirst task was to make the bracing on the wall.
ANd paint the back side of the wall in black.
That's all for this week....
